Jury begins deliberations in schizophrenic man's guard death trial

Updated

A jury has begun deliberating on whether a paranoid schizophrenic killed a female Serco guard by kicking her in the head like a "football".

Humphrey Burke, 23, allegedly carried out the fatal attack on 54-year-old grandmother Lorraine Barwell as she escorted him back to a prison van with colleagues after an appearance at Blackfriars Crown Court on June 29 last year.

Burke, formerly of Friars Wharf, Oxford, was ruled unfit to stand trial for Mrs Barwell's murder and jurors will only have to decide whether he committed the act, and not on guilt.
