William and Kate caught up in earthquake scare

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were caught up in an earthquake scare when a tremor struck the region of India they are visiting.

William and Kate had spent the day touring a national wildlife park in the eastern Indian state of Assam, which is close to where the earthquake was centred near the border with Burma.

There were reports the tremor was felt in Kaziranga National Park, where the royal couple spent the day on a two-hour jeep safari, visiting local communities and feeding orphaned baby elephants and rhinos.

The earthquake struck around 7.25pm local time, measured 6.8 on the Richter scale and caused huge tremors in Kolkata and strong ones in Guwahati a major city in Assam.

There were no immediate reports of any major damage following the quake according to reports.

When asked if the Duke and Duchess, staying in Diphlu Lodge in Kaziranga, had been affected by the tremor, a Kensington Palace spokeswoman said: "As far as I know, tremors were felt across the region and everyone is okay."
