British astronaut Tim Peake currently onboard the International Space Station released a Vine of the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) on 7 April.

The video, posted to Twitter, shows the Southern Lights in a brilliant, gleaming display that's almost otherworldly.

Green stretches of luminescence sparkle, teem and pulsate while moving quickly to the right side of the frame.

As Peake noted, "We don't see so much of the #Aurora Australis but it's just as stunning."

According to the Aurora Service, these spectacular light shows are created when gaseous particles collide with charged particles.

The different types of gas particles create the bright colour variations although the most common colour is green, similar to the one Peake filmed.

North America and Europe are generally considered the best places to watch the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) while the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) can often be seen from Australia.

The British astronaut also shared a spectacular picture of The Palm resort in Dubai over the weekend.

The Palm Islands were artificially created and sit just off the coast of Dubai.

The islands are home to a number of residential and leisure developments and are increasingly popular with tourists.

The unusual islands are also visible from above on flights leaving from Dubai International Airport.
