Speaking to the Mirror, the head of the local rescue service, Pracetuo Budiarto, said: "We believe that this man was attacked by a crocodile.

"The body had one hand missing. There was a well-defined bite on the man's left hip."

According to the Guardian, Budiarto said a large saltwater crocodile was spotted following the body when it was found.

Sergey was a keen snorkeller and usually went with friends and a guide, however he decided to go off alone for his recent trip to the remote Minyaifun island.

His body was taken to Sorong, a two-hour boat ride away from Raja Ampat.
