Saints' Makinson expected to miss rest of season

St Helens have been dealt a blow after it was confirmed winger Tommy Makinson is likely to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

Makinson was on the scoresheet as Saints' ran out 20-12 winners at Widnes Vikings in Super League on Monday.

However, the 24-year-old injured himself in that game and scans have revealed damage to his anterior cruciate ligament.

"We're all gutted for Tommy but he is one of the most professional players we have and will be dedicated to his rehab," head coach Keiron Cunningham told Saints' official website.

"We will miss his contribution to our side but this gives an opportunity for another player in the squad to come through and seize his chance.

"Our squad is experienced at dealing with long term injuries and we will look to it once more. In the meantime, we wish Tommy all the best."
