But at his inquest this week, a coroner said it was impossible to determine what happened to the father of two from Devon as some of his vital organs were missing.

The Sun reports that his wife Sarah said she saw her husband turn blue under the water.

She said: "Someone said we need to get him out. He was blue in colour. It was very distressing; I remember someone said he had a weak pulse."

According to the Plymouth Herald, Dr Jason Davies, who was instructed to carry out an autopsy said: "My interpretation has been hindered by the incomplete state of his organs. From my autopsy alone, I have not found any feature to explain his death."

He concluded the damage of Mr Grigg's lungs showed the effects of drowning.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
