Rare footage has emerged from Russia of two polar bear cubs playing while their mother keeps an eye on them from a small ridge.

The video, filmed in northwest Siberia last year, shows the cute bears play fighting on a sandy plain.

While her youngsters engage is some playful rough and tumble, it looks like the mother is less than interested in her cubs' activities, only casting an eye over to them every so often.

At one point it even appears as if the mother bear has fallen asleep, presumably happy in the notion that her children can look after themselves against any predator they might come up against.

Polar bears can be found in various other areas around the world including Canada, Greenland and the Svalbard archipelago or Norway.

According to Polar Bears International the animals generally live in the circumpolar north where they are able to hunt ice seals, which are there primary prey.

In September last year an Arctic research mission in north Russia was halted after the team of meteorologists faced problems with local polar bears.

According to the BBC they were unable to gather data from the sea because the bears were fighting over food in the Vaygach Island area.

The scientists were unable to scare the animals away with flares and so had to postpone their investigations.
