The very first silver dollar struck for the United States has just arrived in London.

'The Flowing Hair Silver Dollar' is the centre piece of Bruce Morelan's collection and the coin was created 222 years ago in 1794.

Morelan explains that the United States was still a very young nation at the time this coin was struck and it was very important for the country to get onto the world's stage by creating their own coinage.

He claims that getting the dollar designed and minted was of 'national importance' at the time.

If this really is the first dollar to have ever been made then it's highly likely that President George Washington inspected it himself.

The 'Flowing Hair Silver Dollar' is thought to be worth more than $10,000,000 currently.

In 1999 the coin more than doubled the previous record set for the sale of a coin when it was sold for $10 million at auction, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the BBC the coin attracts such a high price thanks to its rarity, condition and cultural value.

The BBC reports that there are only around 130 in existence today and the coin shows the Liberty figure on one side and an eagle with open wings on the other side.

The coin is currently on display in London and Richard West from Baldwin's, the auction house, said: "A rare coin is one of a few thousand. We would class the 1794 coin as very or extremely rare."

As evidence of how the value of this rare coin has risen, it was sold in 1947 for just $1,250 and in 1991 for £506,000.

Other vintage dollar coins reach staggering prices on eBay with a coin from 1802 on sale for £1,359,800 and a Bust Silver Dollar from 1794 on sale for £1,014,000.
