Learning about trans community 'challenging', says Caitlyn Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner has said learning about the trans community is "challenging" because her first meeting with a trans person was only nine months ago.

The 66-year-old, who has been described as the most famous openly transgender woman in the world, was speaking about the second season of her reality TV series I Am Cait.

"The difficulty for me has been learning about the community," she said.

"I'd never even met another trans person until nine months ago, really, when I had all the girls over for dinner and we sat down and started talking about it."

The girls Jenner referred to include Geena Rocero, Candis Cayne and Jenny Boylan, who are also transgender and have featured in I Am Cait.

With the trans community facing stigmatisation by conservatives in America, many were surprised when Jenner revealed she was a Republican in 2015.

She admitted to finding it "difficult" to get a handle on US presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

"I have not figured out what Donald Trump is and so many of the issues where he's at. I think that's very difficult," the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star said.

"When I listen to him talk, he'll talk about this or that, he'll be great for women's issues, he says, but then he doesn't say how so I don't know. We'll see what happens."

I Am Cait, broadcast in the UK by digital channel E!, charts Jenner's transition from Olympic hero and TV personality Bruce to Caitlyn the transgender advocate.

Season two follows Jenner as she travels across the country with friends and activists, but it will also show how much of an adjustment it is to be Caitlyn.

In the third episode, viewers will see Jenner mourning her former identity after receiving her new driving licence.

"Bruce was a good person and did a lot of good in his life ... but sometimes, I did feel like I was throwing him out and that was tough. But we deal with that," she said.

"It was time for this woman that's lived inside me ... let's see what she can do with life."

The first season of the show was a mixture of Jenner's new life campaigning for transgender rights and soapier moments as it crossed territory with fellow E! reality series Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

The finale featured a showdown with her ex-wife Kris Jenner as they attempted to bury the hatchet.

The couple were divorced in 2015.

"It wasn't because of gender issues," Jenner said. "It was just a lot of things in our relationship and we both decided let's not argue about this, let's go our separate ways."

She added: "We had 23 great years together and she's a great person, we have a great relationship now."

Jenner's daughters Kendall and Kylie appeared in I Am Cait to publicly show their support for her new life, as did stepchildren Rob, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, alongside Kim Kardashian West and her rapper husband Kanye West.

"One of the things I really had to deal with is, I've always wondered, because I felt like God made me this way, why did he do this?" Jenner said.

"I kind of had somewhat of a revelation and that turning point was saying to myself maybe this is the reason God put me on this earth - to, number one, be open with myself about truly who I am as a person.

"There is nothing better in life to not have any secrets and living your life authentically. Nothing better than that.

"And two, maybe you can make a difference now."
