You'd think that being a member of the British royal family would guarantee you a stay at any hotel in the world. Apparently not.

One luxury hotel in France told Kate Middleton, Prince William and Prince Harry that there was no room at the inn (literally) when they tried to book rooms.

The three royals will be travelling to France for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme on 30 June and wanted to stay at the Hotel Marotte - the only 5-star hotel in the Amiens area.

But unfortunately the hotel had to refuse the request as they are fully booked.

Speaking to The Local, a hotel receptionist said: "Unfortunately it is true. We have to decline many many people for the 30 June."

She added that it was a "shame" but explained: "We can't kick other guests out. It's the 100th anniversary of the Somme and some people booked two years in advance because it's all concentrated on one day - really the ceremony should have been planned over a week."

It is thought the royals requested two nights in four suites at the hotel, which boats 12 rooms over two buildings.

Hotel manager Olivier Walti also confirmed the request had to be turned down.

According to the Daily Telegraph, he said: "The Foreign Ministry contacted us in January to see if we were able to accommodate the royal family on the occasion of the Somme commemorations.

"We had to decline the offer, it is impossible, we are already booked solid.

"We would not tell people who have booked with us for months and who have already paid for their stay, sorry, but the royal family is coming, we will have to cancel. It's just unthinkable ethically."

The news emerged just as Kate and William released new official pictures of a skiing holiday to the French Alps (top).

The pair were seen enjoying their first family holiday with their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, in the upmarket area of Courchevel.
