How ex-bulimic Geri learned to 'celebrate cake'

Updated

Former Spice Girl Geri Horner has revealed how learning to "celebrate cake" helped liberate her from an unhealthy relationship with food.

The singer appeared on The Great Sport Relief Bake Off in February to the delight of her daughter Bluebell, nine, who loves the BBC One show.

Despite fearing she would humiliate herself, Horner, formerly Geri Halliwell, made an impression with her sweet treats and was crowned star baker.

The 43-year-old told the Mail on Sunday's You magazine: "Throughout my 20s, I had bulimia. Even when I'd recovered from it, I had a distant relationship with food.

"I wanted to be a healthy example for my daughter, so I tried to have balance. But to bake properly and celebrate cake rather than run from it was such a landmark for me.

"The creativity of baking something is like writing a song; it's a mood-changer."

She added that making her first dish for Paul Hollywood to sample - a tart with flaky pastry - was terrifying but appearing on the show "taught me that it's good to say yes and leave your comfort zone".
