1. Energy bars
They sound healthy and full of nutrients, but a lot of energy bars contain glycerine and maltitol syrup, which can cause bloating and gas. The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition notes that maltitol is associated with stomach pain in adults – and studies show that consuming just 40g of maltitol daily is enough to trigger abdominal pain.

2. Vegetable skins
Vegetables can be hard to digest, especially skins from aubergines and peppers. Peel your veggies first and mash and puree them before eating.

3. Grapes
Grapes might be healthier for you than sweets, but you need to watch how many you eat. Grapes are high in fructose, a natural sugar that causes gas. Eat cranberries and blueberries instead – they'll give you an antioxidant boost without the bloating.

4. Nuts
Nuts are high in fat and fibre, which can slow the digestive process. If you have a sensitive tummy, limit the amount you eat, or switch to an organic nut butter.

5. Avoid carbonated drinks
Fizzy drinks and carbonated water can also cause bloating, so stick to plain water instead.
