Nikon removes winner's photoshopped plane image and apologises

Nikon has taken down the winning entry of a photography competition after it was revealed the image was photoshopped.

Chay Yu Wei's photo 'Look Up' which shows a plane flying above a set of ladders won the content but soon after he was announced the winner, social media users pointed out that the picture had been doctored.

According to the BBC, it also emerged that the same photo appeared on Instagram by another amateur photographer a year earlier.

Nikon Singapore took to Facebook to apologise and said: "We have engaged with the contestant on this, who has offered to withdraw from the competition in agreement with this conclusion. These reasons compel us to do the right thing by our community and by the standards that are expected of Nikon, and as such, we will shortly be removing 'Look Up' from our pages."

Mr Yu Wei also issued an apology on social media and wrote: "I would like to apologize for the mistake I have done... Like one user commented, I was on a photo walk in Chinatown and I chanced upon that set of ladders. I snapped a picture of it, and subsequently felt that a plane at that spot would make for an interesting point of view. Hence, I inserted the plane with PicsArt and uploaded it to Instagram. That's how I use Instagram, sometime it's to showcase the work I'm proud of, sometimes just to have fun."

After Yu Wei won the competition commenters were quick to point out that the plane in the photo appeared pixelated and was clearly pasted onto the image of the ladders.

One wrote: "He took a similar photo last year as well. Must have been really lucky and skilful to have captured such low-flying planes twice."

Another said: "There's nothing wrong with the photo, I know tons of IGers who puts a plane on it or photoshop many stars etc, the problem is you shouldn't have lied about waiting for it, there are many people out there who isn't stupid".
