A "would-be robber" was thwarted after being caught by a man in a Superman costume.

Antonio Cortes, who was dressed as the caped hero for a charity fundraiser, went to the aid of the victim at a bank in Gloucester city centre after hearing screaming.

Mr Cortes, 32, who had been eating his breakfast in a neighbouring pub, chased the alleged robber down the street and apprehended him before the police arrived.

A 54-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody, Gloucestershire Police said.

A force spokesman said: "The incident happened at around 11.40am on January 27 at the Co-Op bank on St Aldate Street in Gloucester.

"A man wearing dark clothing walked into the business and assaulted the victim. The offender was apprehended by passers-by including a man dressed as Superman.

"The victim sustained neck injuries and was treated by ambulance staff at the scene. A 54-year-old man was arrested and is currently in custody."
