A couple in New Jersey found a new meaning to the phrase 'snowed-in' - when they tried to leave their house only to find a wall of snow imprinted with their front door.

Shawn Yin and Helen Liu attempted to go out on Saturday morning, and emergency services couldn't reach them until Sunday afternoon.

According to the Daily Mail, it took workmen more than an hour to remove the build-up.

A record 27 inches of snow fell in the area, with Washington left at a virtual standstill.

At least 46 people have died in the storm, a quarter of a million customers lost power and hundreds of crashes have been reported.

According to the Weather Channel, travel bans banning non-emergency vehicles from the roads of New York and Baltimore were lifted early Sunday morning.

The site adds that amidst the bad news, stories of survival have been emerging with one Maryland woman being plucked from her snow-stuck car on Monday after being trapped for three days.

The UK is currently feeling the effects of the storm, with strong gales and rain hitting many parts of the country.
