World War prisoner camp to become luxury holiday resort

A former World War II concentration camp that once housed thousands of prisoners is being turned into a luxury beach holiday resort.

The prison is on Mamula island in the Adriatic sea, off the coast of Montenegro. It is believed to have held about 2, 300 prisoners during World War II.

Pools, a yacht marina, spas and dance floors are planned for the site.

The decision to transform the island into a holiday resort has drawn some criticism, but the government of Montenegro has defended its decision, saying the resort would provide a boost to the economy.

The developer says it is investing $16.4 million (around £11 million) into the project.
