The Jin Air plane, carrying 163 passengers, took off without its front door properly sealed.

The aircraft was on its way to Busan, but had to turn back to Cebu, Philippines, about half an hour after taking off. Passengers say they suffered headaches and felt pain in their ears.

One man said: "I thought I would die here because I was numb with a headache."

The passengers eventually got on another plane and landed in Busan 15 hours later than the original flight had been scheduled.

Head of the Jin Air Busan office, Park Mun-seong, apologised for the incident. Jin Air, the budget affiliate of Korean Air Lines, say they couldn't find any defects.

The government says it will review the safety levels at its six budget airlines, including Air Busan, Air Incheon, Jeju Air, T'way Air and Easter Jet.

According to CNN, the plane was flying at 10,000 feet when the error was discovered.

A spokesperson for Jin Air said: "Each passenger will be given a compensation of 100,000 ." This equates to around £57 per person for the 15-hour delay.

Speaking to the Inquirer, an official said: "We presume that the windy sound came from a gap in the door, which could have led to a drop in cabin pressure. Some passengers might have complained about inconvenience because of it."
