Man charged after three Doncaster pedestrians killed in Boxing Day crash

A man has been charged with multiple offences after a car ploughed into a group of pedestrians on Boxing Day leaving three people dead and a man fighting for his life hospital.

The four people were walking along Sutton Road in Askern, Doncaster, when they were hit by a blue Volvo S60 car, South Yorkshire Police said.

Two women, both aged 54, and a 48-year-old man died from their injuries, while a 57-year-old man is being treated in hospital for life-threatening injuries.

A force spokesman said Ricky Joe Hepworth, 24, of Newmarche Drive in Askern, has been charged with three counts of death by dangerous driving, three counts of aggravated vehicle taking, three counts of causing a death while driving uninsured and unlicensed, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

Hepworth is remanded in custody and was due to appear at Doncaster Magistrates' Court on Monday.

On Sunday, Former Labour leader Ed Miliband sent his condolences to the families of those who died.

Mr Miliband, the Doncaster North MP, wrote on Twitter: "My deepest sympathies to the families of the 3 people killed in the horrific car accident in Askern and the person seriously injured."
