This group of divers were on their way to Roca Partida to swim with a family of humpback whales, but before they got there they received some sad news.

They were told that the mother humpback had lost her calf after it got attacked by a group of killer whales.

When the divers finally reached the mother whale, it was obvious to see that she was utterly inconsolable after losing her child.

The footage shows the divers just a few metres away from two of the whales in the group.

The whale closest to the camera, presumably the mother, can be seen hanging motionless in the water while the other makes slight movements.

According to National Geographic, mothers will nurse their calves for around a year and it takes around ten years for a calf to become fully grown.

It's also believed that mothers and calves swim close together, often touching, as a gesture of affection.

The mammals can weigh as much as 40 tonnes and are considered an endangered species.

Killer whales, or orcas, are often considered to be one of the world's most dangerous and powerful predators.

Roca Partida is the smallest of the Revillagigedo Islands in Mexico.
