Balloon explodes in underground train station and causes chaos


There was chaos on the Madrid metro yesterday after a child's balloon made its way onto the tracks and exploded.

CCTV footage shows the purple balloon floating through the air and onto one of the station's platforms.

A train then arrives as the foil balloon makes its way along the tunnel, as the angle shifts we can then see the passengers waiting on the platform become startled by the noise of the balloon popping as it came into contact with an overhead line.


A flash of light can also be seen from the tunnel as the balloon explodes and the passengers step back from the front of the platform suddenly.

According to RT, the Metro Line 2 was shut down after the remains of the balloon caught fire which ended up in a power cut.

The incident happened at Sol station on one of the city's busiest lines, the helium-filled balloon is thought to have popped at around 7.15am, as commuters were making their way to work, the Mirror reports.

The train station and some of its most used lines, between Banco de España and Santo Domingo, remained disrupted for another hour after the explosion and fire.

According to the official site, the Madrid metro operates over 294 kilometres and serves 301 stations around the Spanish city with more than three million people travelling daily.
