Police are investigating the sudden death of an eight-month-old baby girl.

Officers were first called at around 7.45pm yesterday by the ambulance service to an address in Carlisle, Cumbria.

The baby girl was taken to Cumberland Infirmary where she died.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police said the girl's death was being treated as unexplained.

In a statement, the force said: "Cumbria Police are investigating the sudden death of an eight-month-old girl from Carlisle.

"Police were called at around 7.45pm last night by the ambulance service, who had been called to an address in Carlisle. The baby was taken to Cumberland Infirmary where she sadly died.

"The death is being treated as unexplained.

"Specially trained officers are supporting the family, who have acknowledged tributes to the baby on social media sites.

"They would politely request that people now refrain from doing this in order to enable them to grieve in private."
