First Drive: Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

Updated

There's an ongoing war between the manufacturers to create more and more niche models – cars that cater for a purpose so specific that it sometimes feels that the companies building them aren't sure about who they are for. Enter the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, a competitor for the BMW X6 and a car that is designed for people who want the ride height of an SUV but the drive quality of a sports saloon. Or something like that. Is it a niche too far? AOL Cars finds out.

What is it?

A four wheel-drive, luxury sport SUV. The GLE Coupe is an extremely large five-seater brute, designed to waft passengers along but also provide an involving drive for when the roads get twisty. Designed to be a bit of a motoring chameleon, the GLE Coupe is there for people who want a little bit of everything. But with a top-end price of over £60,000 potential buyers will have to pay a bit more to have their cake and eat it.
