Mark Wood has undergone surgery to repair the ankle injury which has troubled him since forcing his way into the England side.
The 25-year-old paceman missed the third and final Test in the 2-0 series defeat against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates due to the recurring problem with his left ankle.
Wood revealed that he may require an operation and has now gone under the knife after being ruled out of the tour of South Africa.
He tweeted: "Job done! Thanks to Surgeon James Calder and all the staff at Cromwell hospital. Road to recovery starts now."
Wood made his Test debut against New Zealand in May and has taken 25 wickets in eight matches in the longest format of the game at an average of 34.40.
The Durham quick has also featured in seven one-day internationals as well as one Twenty20 international.
