Getting older doesn't have to mean saying goodbye to sex. In fact, a recent survey found that many men and women in England are sexually active in their seventies and eighties.

Researchers from the University of Manchester quizzed older people about their love life and found that 59% of men and 34% of women aged 70-79 had had sex or masturbated in the last year.

If your sex life needs a boost, who better to take advice from than these lovely ladies?

Be honest about what turns you on - Helen Mirren (70)
When it comes to enjoying sex, it's important to embrace what you enjoy (whatever your age) and share your desires with your partner. What turned you on 20 years ago might not anymore. If you don't tell your partner, how will they know?

Take your inspiration from outspoken actress Helen Mirren. "I like sexy stuff. I like looking at sexy photos. I loved Madonna's Sex book and I love Gaga. To be honest, I rather like watching pole dancing," she told The Times newspaper in 2011.

Don't let a knee replacement hold you back - Jane Fonda (77)
Jane Fonda might be more flexible than your average septuagenarian, but she has to contend with ageing like the rest of us. The former fitness guru isn't going to let a hip or knee replacement hold her back – and nor should you.

"While I am quite flexible and I can kneel, sex is not quite as comfortable for me as it used to be before I had a fake knee," she told TV presenter Amanda de Cadenet in 2012. "I prefer to be either lying down or sitting up on a couch with him coming on to me, no pun intended."

God gave us the equipment for a reason - Dolly Parton (69)
Having sex is the most natural thing in the world - and that doesn't change with age. Nor does it become 'dirty' or taboo just because you're now eligible for your pension.

As Dolly Parton wrote in her autobiography: "I was always very open-minded about sex, and I'm glad that I still am... It was never dirty to me. After all, God gave us the equipment and the opportunity. There's the old saying, 'If God had meant for us to fly, he'd have given us wings'. Well, look at what he did give us."

There's more to sex than having an orgasm – Kim Cattrall (59)
There's more to sex than the big 'O'. Stop trying to have an orgasm every time, and you might find you enjoy making love a whole lot more.

As Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall once told The Sun: "I wish I had not made an orgasm my only goal. It is all about all-round sexual fulfilment."

You're too old for sex... only if you think you are - Bettie White (93)
Sexual desire might wane for some as they get older, but unless you have a medical issue there's no reason why it should. After all, arousal is as much about being in the right headspace as anything else.

As Golden Girl Bettie White said to AARP Magazine in 2010: "Does desire melt away with age? I'm waiting for that day to come. Sexual desire is like ageing - a lot of it is up here."
