A tiger was shot dead in India after killing a farmer just days ago and later attacking a forest guard.

The predator attacked the guard as he was tying a buffalo calf to a tree as bait to capture the animal alive.

A senior official told Indileak that the tiger was hiding in the Bandipur range of the Bandipur National Park.

Officials had planned to capture the tiger alive and relocate it. Around 60 workers from the special tiger protection force were sent to the area.

An official said that staff were aware that tigers tend to return to the same spot where they last killed their prey.

He added: "This exercise was being undertaken with an intention to localise tiger in the same area for capturing it alive."

The BBC reports that the forest guard, Shiv Kumar, was taken to hospital and his condition was described as "out of danger".

Last year, a woman was snatched by a tiger and dragged into a forest in India while her husband watched helplessly.

The couple and a boat driver were catching crabs in a shallow river in the Sunderbans forest, West Bengal, when the attack happened

Forest official Nabin Chandra Bahunguna said forest guards searched for the woman but couldn't find her.
