This image shows the terrifying moment when a KM Wihan Sejahtera ferry ran into trouble in Indonesia.

As the photo shows, the passengers on board decided to take matters into their own hands when it came to leaving the boat.

There were 175 passengers and crew on board the Indonesian ferry when it sank.

According to Maritime News the ferry capsized in Lamong Bay after water started coming on board. The crew decided to return to the terminal, but unfortunately time ran out, and the boat sank 200m from shore.

Passengers resorted to clinging to ropes sliding down the side of the ship before jumping into the water below where rescue boats and fishing boats were waiting to help.

The Tanjung Perak harbour master reported that everyone had survived the incident.

According to the Daily Mail the boat began to list while it was in Tanjung Perak Port, in East Java. It has been reported that the listing occurred as a result of an imbalance when the ship was loaded.

Head of Public Relations of Terminal Lamong Bay, Reka Yusmara, said: "Currently the ship had tilted back and partially sank, but we are afraid that might have some people inside the wreck."

In August this year we saw footage of passengers jumping from a burning ferry in the Philippines.

The MV Wonderful Sea was in the port at Ormoc when it was seen covered in flames.

News reports at the time confirmed that all 544 passengers had escaped the burning ship safely and only two members of crew suffered minor cuts and bruises.
