Avengers sequel picks up seven nominations for People's Choice Award

Superhero blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron, medical drama Grey's Anatomy and singer The Weeknd have scored the most nominations for the People's Choice Awards.

The Avengers sequel picked up seven nods for prizes voted for by fans, including nominations for stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson.

The film is nominated for favourite movie alongside Fast and Furious 7, Inside Out, Jurassic World and Pitch Perfect 2, as well as favourite action movie, competing against Insurgent, Fast and Furious 7, Jurassic World and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.

Avengers star Downey Jr, who plays Iron Man in the Marvel franchise, will compete for favourite movie actor, as well as favourite action movie actor alongside his co-star Hemsworth.

Johansson is nominated for favourite movie actress, alongside Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock. She is also nominated for favourite action movie actress for her role as the Black Widow in the blockbuster series.

Grey's Anatomy picked up six nominations including favourite TV show and favourite network TV drama, while stars Jesse Williams and Justin Chambers are among the nominees for favourite dramatic TV actor and Ellen Pompeo and Sara Ramirez are among the nominees for favourite dramatic TV actress.

The Weeknd, who scored a huge hit this summer with his single I Can't Feel My Face, received five nods. He will compete against British musician Ed Sheeran for favourite male artist, alongside Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas and country singer Luke Bryan.

The Weeknd is also nominated for favourite breakout artist and favourite R&B artist, while his single is nominated for favourite song and his record Beauty Behind The Madness is nominated for favourite album.

Sheeran is also nominated for favourite pop artist in a category dominated by female singers. He will face off against Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift.

Veteran singer Madonna is nominated for both favourite music icon, which pits her against Paul McCartney, Prince, Steven Tyler, and Stevie Wonder, and favourite female artist, against Demi Lovato, Lana Del Rey, Selena Gomez, and Taylor Swift.

One Direction will vie for the favourite group award with Fall Out Boy, Fifth Harmony, Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5.

The winners of the People's Choice Awards will be announced at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on January 7, 2016.
