James Bond may be best-known for his dashing good looks, charming smile and very specific cocktail requirements, but a new study has revealed that what he perhaps should be better known for is the incredible trail of destruction he leaves behind him. Apparently over the course of the films Bond has caused £8 billion worth of damage.

Keen insurance boffins at More Than went over all of the 24 films, itemising all the damage - from a £3 smashed ashtray to a £25 stolen shirt, and the wanton destruction of everything from a £300 million super-villain lair to a £1.1 billion submarine.

By far the most destructive film was Moonraker, in which Roger Moore managed to help destroy five space shuttles, and an entire space station - at a cost of almost £4.1 billion.

Moonraker is largely responsible for the eyebrow raising news that Roger Moore, is the most destructive 007 of all time. He managed to destroy £4.6 billion worth of valuables in his 12 years at the helm of the franchise - more than all the other Bonds put together.

The second most destructive film was The World Is Not Enough, in which Pierce Brosnan secured his place as the second most destructive Bond, by blowing up a £1.1 billion Russian nuclear submarine.

Daniel Craig had a smashing time on Spectre too - causing £449 million worth of damage during the latest installment of the iconic franchise. Even in the trailer he managed to squeeze £7.5 million of damage into a couple of minutes - which is more than the total in Thunderball, Octopussy and For Your Eyes Only combined.

The experts painstakingly counted that 210 vehicles were damaged - costing around £339 million, while £1.1 billion of damage has been caused to homes and landmarks. This includes the destruction of a £3 million Scottish mansion in Skyfall, and Blofeld's £300 million volcano lair in You Only Live Twice.

Averaged out over every film, they rack up an average of £349 million of damage in each installment.

The Bonds in order of destruction are:

1. Roger Moore / £4,630,196,134 (£661,456,590 average per film)
2. Pierce Brosnan / £1,905,765,384 (£476,441,346 average per film)
3. Sean Connery / £1,297,087,560 (£216,181,260 average per film)
4. Daniel Craig / £449,183,670 (£132,582,275 average per film)
5. Timothy Dalton / £80,058,778 (£70,082,275 average per film)
6. George Lazenby / £36,417,110 (£36,417,110 average per film)

Unsurprisingly, More Than recommends Bond goes in search of some specialist insurance. Perhaps in the next Bond film we can look forward to a few nail-biting minutes of Bond shopping around for the cheapest deal, being stuck on the phone waiting for an underwriter, and negotiating a better price.... at least it would keep him out of trouble for a few precious minutes.
