UK village church has 'more tilt than Leaning Tower of Pisa'

A village in the UK is hoping to see a boost in tourists - because the local church has more tilt than the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The tower of St James' Church in Dry Doddington, Lincolnshire, is said to have a tilt of 5.1 degrees after being built on a Pagan burial site, reports the BBC.

Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa (pictured below) has 3.97 degree tilt.

The famous tower was originally tilted at an angle of 5.5 degree, but it was reduced after restoration work.

The Lincolnshire Echo reports that the tower of the church, built in the 12th century, recently had a £100,000 restoration.

Church warden Alex Maniurka told the paper: "'Our intention was not to correct the lean of the building, because that is what makes the tower so special.

"We started planning the project in 2013 because the stones on the tower were eroding and it was becoming a health and safety hazard.

"Our main aim was to restore the tower in a sensitive way and to make it look authentic."

And now parishioners hope visitors will come for tours.

Rev Sonia Barron told the BBC: "People seeing it for the first time are very impressed, from certain angles you can distinctly see the lean.

"It should be a lot more famous and perhaps it will become so, now it has been repaired.

"I don't think it is widely known that it leans more than the Leaning Tower of Pisa."
