Rod Stewart has admitted that he books a second hotel room during his tours - just for his portable model train collection.

The singer says he likes them to accompany him as they are his "hobby".

Speaking to the Mirror, Rod said: "When I'm on the road in hotel rooms, like the Ritz-Carlton in New York, they clear out a room for me.

"All my cases come in and they set up tables and lamps and it becomes my workshop. I do it on the road.

"All my cases come on the jet and away we go. Every man should have a hobby."

Not only does Rod have a portable collection, at home he has a permanent train set that measures 30ft by 110ft - bigger than a tennis court - that has 13 trains running on it.

Rod, 70, has been open about his fascination with trains, which started as a young boy living on Archway Road in London overlooking the station and Tube lines.

According to the Daily Mail, he said: "My dad bought me a train set and it has stayed with me for ever and ever.

"It's a wonderful hobby. People laugh but I don't care."

The singer, whose 30th solo album Another Country comes out next month, also said he would like to buy his own steam engine, and is looking into it.
