In the UK there are a number of charities that members of the public can donate to if they wish to help. Here we've taken a look at the work done by three of the UK's animal charities.

RSPCA

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is one of Britain's best known and oldest welfare charities, having been established in 1824.

They aim to raise the standards of care for animals as well as raising awareness of the issues animals in our country are facing every day. The RSPCA also has the power to privately prosecute those it believes have neglected animals under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The RSPCA work to rescue, investigate and rehabilitate animals that have been mistreated. One of the major causes that the RSPCA are currently fighting for is dog fighting. Although this has been illegal in the UK for nearly 180 years there are still a number of offences reported.

If you wish to support them, you can donate to the RSPCA online here.

Born Free Foundation

Born Free was started by actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna in 1998 and is an international animal rights organisation that works to conserve and protect the rights of wild animals around the world.

Born Free's emergency response teams work to rescue vulnerable animals and care for them in spacious bush sanctuaries. The charity has been described as 'big enough to make a difference, but small enough to care'. The foundation works to save orphaned big cats, great apes and elephants.

You can donate to the Foundation here or learn more about getting involved with fundraising here.

Blue Cross

The Blue Cross for pets has been running since 1897 and they help tens of thousands of ill, injured and homeless pets each year. Animal hospitals, clinics and rehoming services are all on call to help suffering animals throughout the year.

The charity currently cares for around 40,000 pets a year but they are constantly looking to expand to have the capacity to help even more animals, but they can't do any of this without financial help from the public.

- £2 a day could let a cat stay at one of the centres
- £20 could fund a horse's basic hoof care
- £136 could provide clinical care for a homeless dog

If you would like to support the Blue Cross then head to their website to donate.

Head to the World Animal Day website to find out more about events organised in your area. You don't have to be part of a group or organisation to take part, it's something that everyone can join in with.
