A spokesman said the crews began the rescue by pumping water out of the pol using a portable pump.

The farmer used machinery to build steps out of large hay bales as the animal rescue team got into the remaining 0.5 metres of water to help the animal back onto dry land.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue posted pictures on Facebook of the incident.
