Women house hunters tend to be more willing to make compromises when it comes to settling for a property, but they are also less likely to be happy with the end result, research suggests.

Which? Mortgage Advisers asked people who had bought a house in the past five years whether they had made any compromises on the property they had bought.

It found that 72% of women had made some sort of concession, while men were more likely to dig their heels in, with 65% having made a compromise.

But in the end, it was men who were more satisfied with the sacrifices they had made, at 91%, compared with 88% of women who were happy, according to the research among nearly 2,000 people.

The survey also found that crime levels, the number of bedrooms and close proximity to schools were the most common factors that people were less willing to make compromises over.

Buyers were generally more willing to overlook factors such as the condition of the property, the garden and whether it was in a preferred location.

David Blake from Which? Mortgage Advisers said: "Buyers often start property searches by imagining their dream home, but our research shows that some form of compromise is almost inevitable."

To ease the squeeze on budgets, it suggests that buyers should consider shared ownership schemes, as well as thinking about whether they can add value in the longer term to a property that has potential for improvement.

Here are the percentages of people who would not compromise on the following factors according to the study for Which? Mortgage Advisers:

- Local crime levels, 90%

- Number of bedrooms, 86%

- Proximity to schools, 86%

- Number of bathrooms, 84%

- Public transport links, 83%

- Local amenities, 81%

- Noise levels, 81%

- Size of property, 79%

- Parking arrangements, 78%

- Commuting time/cost, 78%

- General layout of property, 77%

- Preferred location, 77%

- Garden/external space, 76%

- Overall condition of property/amount of work needed, 71%
