In the wake of the Volkswagen emissions scandal, government ministers are calling for the introduction of accurate vehicles emissions tests within the next year, against a backdrop of doubts concerning the future of diesel power.

Patrick McLoughlin, UK transport secretary, stated that 'real world' tests should be fast-tracked by the EU in order to battle the crisis surrounding VW, according to The Times. A large scale investigation should also be carried out by the EU, which regulates the automotive industry on the continent, to establish the extent of emissions cheating, he said.
