Holidaymakers suffered a frustrating end to their holiday after a Thomson flight to Manchester Airport from Menorca was delayed by 13 hours.

Children were reportedly forced to spend the night sleeping on baggage trolleys at Mahon Airport after the overnight accommodation offered was unsuitable.

Louise Brown, from Stockport, was returning from a week's holiday with her husband and two small children, when they became stuck at the airport.

The flight was meant to take off at 7.30pm on Saturday night, but didn't land in Manchester until 10.10am on Sunday.

The family were offered accommodation at a hotel, but Louise said they were driven to the other side of the island, and when they got there the owners had no idea what was going on.

They then returned to the airport, where they spent the night.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Louise said:"We had a fabulous holiday but this was just a nightmare. They treated us like unattended baggage.

"We were dumped at the airport and that was it. We will be making an official complaint. It is just a total lack of communication and organisation."

According to the Mirror, a Thomson spokesperson said: "We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to customers travelling on flight TOM2657 from Mahon to Manchester Airport.

"The aircraft operating this flight was delayed due to mandatory crew rest restrictions. An alternative aircraft was sourced as quickly as possible and we did all we could to assist our customers at Mahon airport.

"We would like to reassure customers that delays of this nature are extremely rare."

It is thought the delay stemmed from a knock-on effect caused by another Thomson plane having to make an emergency landing at Cardiff Airport.

The BBC reports that Thomson flight TOM6555 was heading into Cardiff from Tenerife in the early hours of Saturday morning when a problem arose.

The airport said it had its emergency team on standby but they were stood down after the plane landed safely at 3.15am.
