An abandoned litter of kittens has been discovered in the boot of a car that was due to be scrapped in Boston, Lincolnshire.

The litter was discovered by a car mechanic who had gone into the Peugeot 106 at Johnson's Garage to find a spare part and was amazed to find the tiny animals inside, the BBC reports.

Graham Johnson, who owns the garage, told The Boston Target: "He was just looking for some parts for an old car and just happened to lift it up and there he found five little kittens.

"He was really shocked... it was just like seeing a spider, really makes you jump sometimes.

He added: "The mother is about somewhere, she's been flying here, there and everywhere."

It's lucky the kittens were found when they were - because the Peugeot was due to be sent for scrapping shortly afterwards.

The garage owner said they believe the kittens are still very young, maybe even just a few days old. According to the BBC the kittens' mother has been back to the garage to visit her babies regularly.

This is not the first time kittens have been found in a surprising place. In 2013 a commuter came across a young kitten in an Underground carriage at Victoria Station in London.

The kitten was taken to the customer services desk from where she was taken to the local Blue Cross animal hospital who nicknamed her 'Victoria'.
