A pair of kayakers off the coast of California had quite a shock when a whale breached the water and landed on them recently.

Whale watchers on a nearby ship saw the whale as it flew out of the water and landed face down back into the water right on top of the kayakers who were floating nearby.

The 50-tonne animal appeared to totally submerge the couple who then didn't reappear on the footage above. However, the kayakers miraculously lived to tell the tale.

During the film one worried spectator can be heard exclaiming: "The kayak, the kayak... Where's the kayak?"

The footage was taken from a Sanctuary Cruises whale-watching boat trip and clearly shows the kayakers sitting on the water before the incident.

One of the kayakers, Tom, a wildlife film director, recounted the experience, calling it "the most extraordinary thing to happen to me... We definitely understood how lucky we were, and were pretty confused."

The couple weren't the only ones to make friends with a whale. Just last week, a group of kayakers near the San Juan Islands in Washington state, USA, got up close and personal with a pod of killer whales.

Footage shows the end of a kayak and a large expanse of water where spurts of water can be seen being fired into the air.

Just moments later they spot one of the whale's fins gliding through the water towards them before the giant animal passes right under the kayak.
