Mo Farah kicks off Great North Run

Britain's biggest running event has been led off by Mo Farah as thousands of runners take part in the Great North Run.

The reigning Olympic champion is looking to defend his title in the elite men's race, having won the famous half marathon in 2014.

Starting in Newcastle and going over the Tyne Bridge, 57,000 people will then make their way through Gateshead and onto the coast at South Shields.

Some of the celebrity names taking part include Professor Brian Cox, Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell, TV presenter Steph McGovern and former footballer Kevin Kilbane.

Last year it became the first mass participation run in the world to have its one millionth competitor cross the line.

It is expected around £25m will be raised by those taking part for charity.
