A woman who was struck by lightning has been saved by her bra.

The incident occurred in Guangzhou, in the Guangdong province in China, when the woman, known only as Ms Lai, was on her way to take her son an umbrella in a local park, reports the Mirror.

But Lai didn't make it to meet her son, and he received a call to say she had been found unconscious on a bridge with burn marks on her chest.

The Daily Mail reports that Ms Lai said at the hospital: "Something was very painful on my chest. I felt like it was burning.

"I think I was unconscious for one to two minutes before I woke up. But I still could not move."

According to the Shanghaiist, Shen Han, a physics professor at Zhongshan University, said the metal umbrella probably acted as conductor for the the lightning, while the metal underwire in the woman's bra diverted the energy away from her vital organs, possibly saving her life.

Lai's vital signs are now normal, but she need further tests to see if she has suffered any permanent damage, reports GB Times.

Back in July 2014, a woman who was struck by lightning in Wiltshire was saved by the rubber on her flip flops.

Jennifer Lyons, 49, was on the phone when a 300,000-volt strike hit a satellite dish and the electricity was then attracted to the microwaves emitted by her phone and struck her on the head.

Plugs came out of the walls, and the hot water, phone lines and internet were all blown out.

But, luckily for Jennifer, she was wearing rubber-soled flip flops, which probably saved her life by insulating her against the electricity running straight through her body.
