A search operation is under way after a crew member went overboard from the Queen Mary 2.

The ship, which left Southampton on Tuesday, has retraced its route to try and trace the missing person and is currently off the coast of the Canadian island Newfoundland, Cunard said.

A spokeswoman for the cruise line said: "We have clearly established that the crew member went overboard earlier this morning.

"The ship is off the coast of Newfoundland and has now retraced its route to search for the crew member.

"We are working closely with local authorities. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Halifax (Canada) on Monday."

On its website, Cunard describes its flagship, the Queen Mary 2, as the "most magnificent ocean liner ever built" which boasts a 3D Cinema, planetarium and spa.
