Katie Derham joins Strictly Come Dancing line-up

Updated

BBC Proms presenter Katie Derham is the fifth celebrity to waltz on to the new series of Strictly Come Dancing.

The 45-year-old Radio 3 host will show off her skills on the dancefloor when the show returns next month, but is already an outside bet to win with one bookmaker.

She said: "Strictly Come Dancing is a national treasure, and I'm extremely excited to be part of such a wonderful show.

"I spend hours admiring professional musicians and performers at the Proms and at BBC Radio 3, so I'm thrilled to have the chance to throw myself into an equally demanding and beautiful world.

She added: "I'm a typical wedding dancer - two glasses of Prosecco and I'm truly fabulous. Or so I think."

Derham has previously hosted the Classic BRIT Awards and learned to conduct on the BBC show Maestro.

The mother-of-two is perhaps best known as the face of the BBC Proms and also presents Radio 3's Afternoon On 3.

She joined ITV in 1998 and, at the age of 27, became the youngest newscaster on British national television and the youngest in ITN history.

Celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott, broadcaster Jeremy Vine, former Coronation Street star Georgia May Foote and EastEnders actress Kellie Bright have already been confirmed as her dance rivals.

Bookmaker Coral has installed Derham as a 50-1 outsider to win the Glitter Ball trophy, while Foote, who played Katy Armstrong in the soap, is the favourite at 6-1, ahead of Harriot at 9-1. Vine is priced at 18-1 and Bright at 25-1.

Coral spokeswoman Nicola MGeady said: "We may regret making Katie Derham the outsider when we see her on the dancefloor, but for now we don't think she will be a title challenger."

The 13th series of Strictly Come Dancing begins on BBC1 in September.
