Average family 'lives in a 3-bedroom home, drives a Ford Focus'

Updated

If you live in a three-bedroom, semi-detached home with a Ford Focus in the driveway then you are the epitome of a typical British family.

If that home also contains £35,486 worth of stuff and you somehow share it with 1.7 other people, then you may as well put a sign out front saying "the Averages live here".

Insurer Aviva has compiled a picture of what the modern family looks like by analysing its customer profiles as well as Government data.

Aside from the findings above, Aviva also said the average home was likely to be built in the 1930s and paid for with a mortgage.

The owners? They'll go by David and Susan, British families' most common names.

Worryingly, most households lack sufficient financial protection should they become ill or unable to work, the insurer said.

"While over a third (35%) of families have life insurance in place, fewer families have critical illness cover (11%) and just 8% have income protection to cover their salary should they become ill or injured and unable to work.

"This is a serious consideration, given that whether families are paying a mortgage or renting, this cost needs to be covered."
