Doctor Who fans get a sneak peak of new series

Updated

Doctor Who fans have been given a glimpse of the upcoming ninth series of the revamped BBC show thanks to a new trailer.

Peter Capaldi returns for his second series as the Time Lord, and opens the trailer by rushing into the TARDIS saying "sorry I'm late".

The sneak peek also shows companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, wielding a rocket launcher.

"He hasn't got a plan yet," she says of The Doctor.

"But he will have, and it'll be spectacular."

Clara is also seen coming face-to-face with the returning Missy, played by Michelle Gomez - the reincarnated alias of The Doctor's old nemesis and fellow Time Lord; The Master.

The trailer shows an array of monsters both old and new, among them a fierce dragon, as well as old enemies the Daleks, of which multiple colours and generations are seen, as well as the Zygons, last seen in the 50th anniversary special.

The Dalek home planet of Skaro is also glimpsed, and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams also features, though her character's story remains a mystery.

"I'm the Doctor, and I save people", Capaldi's Time Lord cries, before he's seen on horse back and confronting an ominous looking alien.

The Doctor is also seen playing a guitar and wearing sunglasses, and comes after show boss Steven Moffat suggested Capaldi's incarnation would be less serious in the new series.

The Time Lord signs off the trailer by answering a Dalek question of "what is going on?" by declaring: "same old, same old. Just The Doctor and Clara Oswald in the TARDIS."

:: Doctor Who returns to screens on September 19 on BBC One.
