Cloudy weather expected following sunny start to the weekend

Cloud will cover much of Britain today, after a sunshine-soaked start to the weekend.

Britain enjoyed blue skies and sweltering heat on Saturday, with a top temperature of 27.8C (82F) recorded in Charlwood, near Gatwick.

But for many Sunday will be a much cloudier day, with temperatures around 20C (68F) in most of England.

Eastern England will experience the best of the sun.

Met Office forecaster Daniel Panton-King, said: "East Anglia down to the Isle of Wight will hold on to plenty of sunshine throughout today, although it might get a little bit cloudier later on."

He added: "Many places will see some patchy light rain at first, but as the day goes on most of England and Wales will get drier and brighter, until the evening, when you will start to see a bit more in the way of cloud and rain coming in again to the South West of England."

Temperatures are unlikely to reach the sizzling highs of Saturday, topping no higher than 25C (77F) or 26C (78.8F), Mr Panton-King said.

Newquay's music and surf festival, Boardmasters, will come to a damp close on Sunday.

The Cornish beach town will see a drizzly start to the day, turning brighter in the afternoon before cloud and rain sets in again. The festival was cancelled last year, after it was battered by heavy rain and winds.

Britain will have a soggy start to the week, with the South West, West Scotland and Northern Ireland seeing heavy rain on Monday morning.

Mr Panton-King said: "Through Monday, the rain will spread eastwards across most places.

"It'll be showery rain, and it will brighten up as the day goes on for most of England and Wales, so there will be some sunshine later in the day."

Tuesday will be largely fine apart from showers in the South East, before warmer and sunnier weather returns on Wednesday.
