New species of flower discovered - and the highest bidder gets to name it

Conservation organisation the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is offering the unusual opportunity to name a newly discovered flower.

Naming rights of new species are usually reserved for the scientists who uncover them, but an auction is being held for a star-shaped flower with yellow petals that hails from the Cederberg mountains in South Africa. WORDS: PA.

All proceeds from the sale will go to support the WWF's conservation work in east and South Africa.

The highest bidder will win the naming rights and the original botanical painting of the flower by South African artist Lisa Strachan.

The auction, which is open to invited guests, will take place at the Linnaean Society of London on June 24.
