Salcombe in Devon has been named the UK's most expensive seaside town, with house prices averaging £672,874.

The stunning resort town, where TV's Mary Berry recently listed her holiday home as up for sale for £800,000, is famed for its mild weather, West Country character and excellent local cuisine.

In the new property prices research by Halifax, it was revealed that house prices have shot up by a third.

According to BT.com, the average price rise is £49,207 (£410 a month), from £159,522 to £208,729.

Sandbanks in Devon was named the second priciest seaside town to buy a property at an average of £614,726, followed by Aldeburgh in Suffolk at £413,393 and Lymington in Hampshire at £404,781.

Dartmouth, Devon (£403,767) took the fifth spot, followed by Lyme Regis, Dorset (£343,604), Budleigh Salterton, Devon (£342,442), Bigbury on Sea, Devon (£333,626) and East Wittering, Sussex (£330,146).

The cheapest seaside haven is Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute, where you can snap up a holiday home costing £73,539.

Craig McKinlay, of Halifax, told the Daily Mail: "Seaside towns have a distinct attraction, offering that all important sea view... There is a romance associated with living by the sea and this is evident in the high house prices."

Salcombe was named the most expensive seaside town last year, with average house prices at £615,344 in 2014.
