A luggage driver for Southwest Airlines was killed in a crash while working at Chicago's Midway International Airport on Friday night.

Michael Yates, 52, was driving the vehicle when it crashed into another service vehicle, sending him out of the car onto the tarmac.

Yates was a retired DuPage County sheriff's deputy who loved to travel, who took the job at Southwest a few months ago to keep himself busy and earn travel benefits.

His son Keegan told NBC Chicago that his family had always worried about his safety while he was a sheriff's deputy and were shocked that something like this could happen at the airport.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, Melissa Ford, a spokesperson for Southwest Airlines, said in statement: "After an accident involving ground equipment, one of our Ramp Agents at Chicago Midway passed away last night.

"Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time. Resources will be on site to support our Southwest Family at Midway."
