Skydiving is what 18-year-olds do while they're travelling the world on their gap years, right? Well, it looks like that's all changed.

These three grandmothers took on the astonishing challenge of throwing themselves out of a plane at 12,500 feet.

The experiences of Bette, 72, Rhoda, 67 and Holgie, 66, are all recorded in this video clip.

Before taking to the skies, the women were asked what the most extreme thing they had done in the past was.

Bette said she had been white water rafting, Holgie opted for swimming with snakes in Argentina while Rhoda kept tight-lipped, insisting her own antics were "too extreme" to be disclosed.

These extreme grannies then piled into a small plane to be taken up to a height of 12,500 ft before jumping in tandem with instructors to the ground.

Bette can be seen to be shouting "I'm feeling exhilarated" before she took her turn in the sky.

Once she'd landed safely on the ground Holgie, clearly enthused by her experience, says: "They open the door for that first time and you actually see how far you are away from the earth, that's where it really begins to sink in what you're doing."

"They say there's peak life experiences, well this is one of them."

But Rhoda didn't seem quite so convinced by the experience, saying: "I feel like I aged ten years!"

She also said: "I feel very proud of myself. It was wonderful... I never want to do it again!"

Holgie closes the video with her final thoughts on the extreme experience: "I'm always taking that leap of faith and it's always paid off."
