A man posing as a Good Samaritan is thought to have mugged a 100-year-old tourist as he helped him to his feet after a fall.

The American victim was visiting Gloucester, where he once lived, with his 70-year-old son when his pocket was picked, Gloucestershire Constabulary said.

The pair had just got off a bus outside a post office when the elder man lost his balance and fell to the ground. WORDS: PA.

A passer-by helped him up, but the following day he noticed a large amount of money, both pounds and US dollars, was missing from his bumbag.

A police spokesman said: "The money was in an envelope inside the bag. Also taken was a brown leather wallet containing a driving licence. The victim believes they were stolen by the stranger.

"The victim is said to be very distressed by the incident. Both men have now returned to the US."

The incident happened on Finlay Road in the city on April 18 but was not reported until a week later.
Anyone with information should call police on 101.
