Police called over passenger mutiny at Birmingham Airport

Police had to be called to Birmingham Airport after a plane delayed for five hours on the tarmac led to a passenger 'mutiny'.

The Qatar Airways flight from Doha had been due into Manchester at 7pm on Monday, but strong wind prevented two landing attempts and the plane had to be diverted to Birmingham.

The plane was then stuck on the tarmac for five hours waiting to be refuelled and for new flight crew to arrive.

Police were called after irate passengers became vocal and started trying to disembark the plane.

According to the Metro, West Midland Police confirmed that airport officers were called at 10.30pm and again two hours later over reports of "disruptive passengers".

A spokesman told the Birmingham Mail: "A further delay in the flight's departure resulted in officers being called again two hours later after passengers became angry and some tried to disembark.

"The airline decided to cancel the flight and transport the passengers to Manchester by road."

Meanwhile, the return flight at Manchester Airport for Doha was also delayed.

A video uploaded to YouTube shows passengers at Manchester Airport waiting of for the return leg of the flight becoming frustrated after events in Birmingham resulted in a delay to their return flight to Doha.

A spokeswoman for Qatar Airways apologised for the delay.

According to the Independent, she said that after the diversion the plane was unable to fly back to Manchester as operating crew had exceeded their legal flying hours by the time that the aircraft had been refuelled.

After five hours passengers were finally told to disembark the plane and were bussed to Manchester.
